Understanding the Impact
Dental Mavericks-Morocco
Dental Mavericks is an organization of dentists, dental therapists, hygienists and medical staff aiding those unfortunate in Morocco and Peru. Dental Mavericks (DM) is located in the United Kingdom with dental work in Morocco and Peru, supporting their underserved communities. Since 2010, the mission of Dental Mavericks has been to promote oral hygiene education and practice while providing dental care to needed populations.
Dental Mavericks’ priority is to diagnosis and treat the dental needs of the people in Morocco and Peru while providing high-quality care that is patient-led and dignified. They currently have operations in Asni, Essaouira and the Rif Mountains of Morocco and in Peru.
Hope Smiles Together connected with Dental Mavericks through two dental therapists in Edinburgh Scotland. Rebecca and her sister, Irene, volunteered with Dental Maverick serving those in Morocco. Their desire to serve those in need inspired me to support her and her dental team any way possible. I was able to meet with Irene while in Edinburgh and hear about her experience. I also met Frazier Mckenzie, a recent dental graduate and hear about the dental school experience in Edinburgh. He is hoping to join Dental Mavericks on an upcoming trip. During our visit, Irene expressed that she was so happy that Hope Smiles Together and Dental Mavericks were partnering as the need for dental hygiene products to distribute to this population was so large. Hope Smiles Together was happy to donate toothbrushes, toothpaste, and floss to them for their next trip. I was so happy to be able to give her these products and discuss her experience in person. Often, we have to send our products to the clinics. It was so rewarding to meet some of the people going to these remote clinics and touching the lives of those in need. I look forward to the day when I am able to practice dentistry and do similar trips and clinics.
Here is my interview with Rebecca and Irene Wylde, Dental therapist volunteers:
- Where did you volunteer with Dental Mavericks? How long were you there? We were in Morocco at two different sites-one urban town and one village. We were in clinic for five days and treated 1107 patients.
- What services did the clinic provide? What type of healthcare people were there? In the clinic, dental and medical services were provided with a focus on caries control. Cavities were so prevalent with the lack of hygiene and the high sugar intake of the population. We had 13 practitioners with 3 dentists, 2 dental therapists, nurses and one sales representative for administration work.
- Where and when is the next trip planned for Dental Mavericks? Dental Mavericks are sending teams out to Peru in August, 2026 and Asni, Morocco in September 2026. We cannot wait to go on our next trip. We ran out of dental hygiene products to distribute last trip so we are so excited for the donation from Hope Smiles Together!
Stories from the Field
“The trip was filled with so many precious memories and fulfilling experiences but one thing that stands out was the way the entire team gelled and worked together. Even though you sign up expecting to meet other people, nothing prepares you for how the Dental Mavericks experience forms such a strong bond between strangers in such a short space of time. We managed to treat over one thousand children in just 5 days and I truly don’t think that would have been possible without the team working element being so strong. It’s crazy to believe on day one you would be forgetting names and on the last day together, it felt like bidding farewell to family! Even now, months later, the whole team still stay in touch in our group chat, spreading positivity and sharing joyful moments together. It truly is a one of a kind experience that I hope many more dental professionals pursue!” Rebecca
