Ronald McDonald House and MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital

The Ronald McDonald House Charities mission is to provide essential services that remove barriers, strengthen families, and promote healing when children need healthcare.  The Charleston Ronald McDonald house is thirty-two rooms which were completely booked when I visited.  They are currently in construction adding an additional thirty-four rooms as they provide housing, essential, and meals to families with family members as patients at the Medical University of South Carolina.  MUSC and Shawn Jenkis Children’s Hospital is across the street providing easy accessibility for family members so to ease the stress of the families during these difficult times.

Hope Smiles Together is happy to provide toothbrushes and toothpaste to the Ronald McDonald House and to these families.  We are happy to be part of relieving any stress possible and helping those staying at the house.  Further, I met with Melissa Kubu, MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital volunteer coordinator, and donated dental supplies to the hospital.  The volunteer team there distribute 125 “need bags” a month to families with pediatric patients.  Hope Smiles Together is excited to become a regular supplier for their bags as they have a high demand and a constant struggle to find supplies.  We are happy to be part of this program and helping families during this time of struggle.

Stories from the Field

Melissa Kubu explained the need is great with the families at MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital.  Her volunteer committee creates 125 bags monthly to distribute to families who have a child seeking treatment at the hospital.  Finding supplies is a huge challenge and she searches everywhere for contributors.  She writes grants and seeks all avenue to help with this project.  Hope Smiles Together looks forward to being a continuous supplier to MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital and the families there.
