Why Dental Health Matters

Every smile tells a story. For many in underserved communities, access to basic dental care can mean the difference between confidence and isolation, health and illness.

Why Dental Health Matters

Understanding the Impact

Local community dental clinics such as Winston-Salem Rescue Mission, East Cooper Community Outreach and NC MOM ( Mission of Mercy) dental programs are crucial as they provide dental care to an underserved population here in the US. Hope Smiles Together works with such group to help contribute dental needs to further their ability to bring education and service to those in need.

Stories from the Field

Hope Smiles Together: Winston-Salem NC Rescue Mission

I was first introduced to the Winston-Salem Rescue Mission from a friend of the family, Dr. Robert Stowe.  His practice in Winston-Salem, NC volunteers at the clinic as the dental practitioner.  His partner, Dr. Travis Hedrick , is currently leading the dental clinic. Throughout the year, I have had shadowing opportunities with Dr. Hedrick observing extractions of teeth with cavities and other minor operations.  I have been able to witness the effect Dr. Hedrick and the Rescue Mission have had on those in dental need in Winston-Salem.

The Winston-Salem Rescue Mission is a part of the Samaritan Medical Clinics in Winston-Salem, NC.  The clinics offers both medical and dental services.  The dental clinic offers free dental services limited to extractions to assist those in dental need. The mission of the clinics is “helping our most vulnerable neighbors”. The dental clinic is offered two times a month on a first come first serve basis.  As I shadowed and assisted as possible, I wanted to incorporate Hope Smiles Together with the Rescue Mission.  As a result, I brought in our toothbrushes, toothpaste, and floss to be distributed to those patients seeking dental service.  Even in our own communities, there is need for dental treatment, dental hygiene and education to assist those who are struggling.
